![]() Courtesy:People Magazine Talk about being blindsided. Today, every celebrity probably is thinking the same thing: If Sandra Bullock can do it, why can't I? Not just adopt a baby — movie stars have been doing that for decades (e.g. Joan Crawford). Not just adopting an African-American baby — celebrities have adopted babies of different races before, too (e.g. Angelina Jolie). It was even the plot of Bullock's latest movie, The Blind Side. No, what Bullock did, as People magazine revealed Wednesday, was pull off one of the most amazing coups in the history of celebrity media: She adopted a baby from New Orleans and took him home in secret in January, despite being in the white-hot spotlight for her hit movie, winning a best-actress Academy Award and suffering through a failing marriage.
Somehow, as reporters gawked at Bullock, 45, and cheating husband Jesse James outside their home in Los Angeles and her other home in Austin, they failed to notice the baby carriage slipping in by the back door?
"I wish I knew how she did it, and then maybe I'd learn for the next time!" half-jokes Brandy Navarre, vice president of the paparazzi agency X17. "It's a mystery to us how she was able to avoid us and the rest of the media."
Says Linda Bell Blue, executive producer of Entertainment Tonightand The Insider."We got blindsided, didn't we?"
"What's interesting is that she was dropping hints along the way — in her Oscar speech she wanted to thank 'all the moms who take care of babies and children no matter where they come from,' " Bell Blue says. Also, she says, by allowing pictures of the baby in People, Bullock has reduced the price tag and competition for photos of him.(People does pay for photos. However, the magazine does not discuss the specifics of any deal.)
"It's a remarkable, impressive head fake," says longtime Hollywood PR consultant Michael Levine. "I'm astounded because celebs have zero privacy in the modern world. I don't know how she did it, but I tip my hat to her."
Even Bullock was stunned. "I don't know how we got away with it," she told People, which reported that Bullock told only a few friends and relatives and employed CIA tactics such as "decoys and dark cars." After a four-year adoption process, she and soon-to-be-ex-husband James brought the infant boy home to Los Angeles in January and named him Louis (for Louis Armstrong), and even held a bris (Jewish circumcision ceremony) but kept it under wraps until after the Oscars in early March.
"We didn't want Louis pulled into the awards season energy," she told People. "I wanted him all to myself."

Maybe other celebs need to take tips from Sandra Bullock on how to cheat the papprazzi. What do you think about Sandra's decision to adopt? I think she makes a really good mother. |
Doctors in Australia have described their amazement at the recovery of a girl who was left unconscious after swimming into the tentacles of a box jellyfish. Rachael Shardlow, 10, suffered horrific injuries to her legs and body when she came into contact with the jellyfish while swimming in an estuary in Queensland, Australia, in December. The girl, who was pulled from the river with the stinging tentacles still clinging to her limbs, lost her vision and then stopped breathing and fell unconscious in the arms of her brother. Jamie Seymour, who has studied jellyfish for 20 years at Queensland's James Cook University told reporters the extent of the sting was "horrific"."When I first saw the pictures of the injuries I just went, 'you know to be honest, this kid should not be alive'. Usually when you see people who have been stung by box jellyfish with that number of the tentacle contacts on their body, it's in a morgue." Box jellyfish are the most dangerous and venomous jellyfish in the world. Adults can grow to 30cm wide with up to 60 tentacles that stretch up to 2 metres long. They are transparent in the water, making them exceptionally difficult to see. At least 63 people are known to have died from being stung by box jellyfish. Each box jellyfish tentacle contains millions of stinging cells called nematocysts, which release venom on contact. Trying to remove the tentacles can cause more venom to be discharged. Death can occur within five minutes of being stung. "These animals kill humans faster than any other venomous animal we know," Dr Seymour said. Comments: 3 |
![]() Flying cars have always been something typically reserved for science fiction, but they have now come closer to reality. The department tasked with exploring the concept, Defense Advanced Projects Agency (DARPA), has cleared the Transformer (TX) program. The flying vehicle is currently in motion for military services rather than the everyday motorist. If the vehicle realizes the capabilities planned, it is possible that by the year 2015, U.S. soldiers will have the ability to drive into battle in a flying car, designed to be seated for four, that will go 250 miles on a tank of fuel and be able to fly through the air and drive on the ground. The Transformer will give troops the ability to avoid traditional and unconventional threats such as ambushes and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and road obstructions. The Pentagon has budgeted 54 million dollars so far to develop the concept. ADARPA spokesman told TechNewsDaily that it would take four years to develop a working prototype. "We're not very far down the road. That gives you an idea about the glide path for this program," Live Science quoted him as saying. Like something out of The Jetsons! err, or the Dukes of Hazzard? ![]() Comments: 2 |
![]() If you're a student, then it probably comes us no to surprise to you to learn that most students can't live without social media links like laptops and cell phones. In a new study titled, '24 Hours: Unplugged,' from the International Center for Media and the Public Agenda (ICMPA) at the University of Maryland, 200 students at the College Park campus were asked to avoid all media for one day. They were asked to write about their experience the next day. The 200 students wrote more than 110,000 words, which is about the same number of words as a 400-page novel. "We were surprised by how many students admitted that they were 'incredibly addicted' to media," project director Susan Moeller said. "But we noticed that what they wrote at length about was how they hated losing their personal connections. Going without media meant, in their world, going without their friends and family. "The students did complain about how boring it was go anywhere and do anything without being plugged into music on their MP3 players. And many commented that it was almost impossible to avoid the TVs on in the background at all times in their friends' rooms. "But what they spoke about in the strongest terms was how their lack of access to text messaging, phone calling, instant messaging, email and Facebook, meant that they couldn't connect with friends who lived close by, much less those far away." One student gave the feedback: "Texting and IM-ing my friends gives me a constant feeling of comfort. When I did not have those two luxuries, I felt quite alone and secluded from my life. "Although I go to a school with thousands of students, the fact that I was not able to communicate with anyone via technology was almost unbearable." Wow. Unbearable even! What do you think? Are we too dependent on social media? |
![]() Popstar Leona Lewis doesn't understand why people need to get drunk to enjoy themselves? Lewis thinks people who need to be drunk to have fun have a "stupid mindset", Stylist magazine reported. The 25-year-old star doesn't really "like the taste" of alcohol and can have a good time without booze. "I find some people's attitude to drinking ridiculous. I think it's so funny that people think you have to drink in order to have fun. It's such a stupid mindset! A lot of my friends are like, 'I need a drink to get on the dance floor!' I don't get that 'help me to relax' thing. If I'm around my friends then I can really relax and have a good time, that's all I need. I don't need alcohol," Lewis said. The singer is very close to her friends and family and admits she misses them when she is on tour, but she is learning to deal with being away from the UK. The 'Bleeding Love' singer, who won Simon Cowell's pop star search show 'The X Factor' in 2006, added, "I am quite an emotional person and I'm very sensitive to certain issues. But I've gained a lot of independence going out on my own because usually I've got my very protective family and people around me. But I go home whenever I can. Sometimes my parents will come with me but it's about balancing that. I do enjoy it more when I have my family around me though." As well as missing her friends and family, Leona also hates to be apart from her long-term boyfriend Lou Al-Chamaa. "My relationship is very, very precious to me. We're a partnership so we just get on with it, really. We just work it out." How cool! We're all about having a good time too - but excessive drinking usually ruins a good time - not only for you, but also for those around you. Besides, isn't it better to remember what went down the night before? And don't get me started on hang-overs... What do you think? Comments: 2 |
