Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists have found how the potentially deadly yellow-fever-transmitting Aedes aegypti mosquito finds a host. - Read on...
They have discovered that the mosquito detects the specific chemical structure of a compound called octenol as one way to find a mammalian host for a blood meal.
Scientists have long known that mosquitoes can detect octenol, but this latest finding explains in greater detail how Ae. Aegypti - and possibly other mosquito species - accomplish this.
ARS entomologists have shown that Ae. aegypti taps into the "right-handed" and "left-handed" structural nature of octenol, which is emitted by people, cattle and other mammals.
This ability to detect the "handedness" of molecules has been shown in mammals, but the discovery is the first case of scientists finding out how it works in an insect, according to the researchers.
When they hunt for a blood meal, mosquitoes hone in on a variety of chemicals, including carbon dioxide, lactic acid, ammonia and octenol - Blah... blah... blah... sorry, by this point it all got too technical for me.
The study may also open the door to speedier development of better mosquito repellents and traps.
The findings have been published in PLoS ONE.
- So basically - I smell, so therefore the mosquitoes want a taste of me?!
Which begs the question: What was Noah thinking by allowing pesky mosquitoes on the ark??
I guess they have their place in the order of creation - just not anywhere near MY skin, thanks!!
Well The Foo Fighters have started writing material for their new album and have chosen to collaborate with Nirvana's producer Butch Vig.
The 'Nevermind' producer is to be brought in by Grohl almost 20 years after they originally worked together.
Foo Fighters have nailed the music market right in the head with chart topping albums over chart topping albums and now seem to want to go down memory lane and churn up some new numbers with a lot of heavy content, which is precicely why they have chosen to work with Butch Vig.
The band has also decided to forget about using posh studios to record and are favouring to return to a garage setting to compose and record this album.
"I think this could be our heaviest album yet," Grohl was quoted saying.
Which is your favourite Foo Fighters' song? I personally like "The Pretender".
A middle-aged man who was declared dead by doctors, started to move when he was being taken for burial in Mendhar.
Abdul Karim of Bhati Dhar village was pronounced dead by doctors yesterday at sub-district hospital in Mendhar. His body was later shifted to his house where relatives and villagers gathered to mourn his death.
On route to the prepared grave for his burial, villagers were shocked to see Karim moving! He later started talking!!
Karim was again brought to the hospital, where his family members have demanded action against the doctor who pronounced him dead.
One has to wonder how many more of the living get buried by mistake? Elvis? MJ??
The American singer-songwriter will be creating a number for Shah Rukh Khan's home production movie Ra.1
Shah Rukh Khan seems to have had a number of resons as to why he chose Akon over the rest. He said, “Akon is one of the biggest musical sensations and we are proud to host him in India. I feel his association with our movie will only make it bigger. I have heard his songs and he is brilliant. He is edgy and he makes people dance. When we make movies, we look to entertain. So, I am sure Akon and we will have great fun.”
Akon shot to world-wide fame with his album Konvicted in 2006. The single 'Smack That' featuring Eminem was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards.
Akon's not the first to venture into Bollywood. I think Snoop Dogg had to do something with Bollywood last year if I'm not mistaken.
An interesting combination? What do you think? Let me know
If you've watched the latest Star Trek flick from last year, the same movie that won the Best Makeup Award at the Oscars, you wouldn't have imagined it to end like this!
A real treat for all you sci-fi fans out there with a funny bone :-)
Enjoy the video and feel free to comment. This is unexpectedly hilarious in the way it ends!
Pink Floyd has begun legal action against music label EMI Group Ltd. over the way royalty payments are calculated in the digital era.
The group's lawyer, Robert Howe, told the High Court that the band was disputing the way royalties for online sales are worked out.
He said the group also wants a ruling on whether EMI can sell tracks "unbundled" from their original albums.
Howe said the band's contract prohibits selling tracks "otherwise than in the original configuration of the Pink Floyd albums." EMI claims the rule applies only to physical albums, not the Internet.
Floyd are probably the biggest selling psychedelic-progressive rock band in the world with their 1973 release Dark Side of the Moon, which hit multi-platinum status in the very same year with a whooping record sale!
They are also a major influence on musicians and music lovers in India and are always given the high shelf in any person's music CD rack!
Are you a Floyd fan? Let me know what it is about their music that you love.
I personally have always been facinated by space. Here is something interesting:
NASA discovered on the 7th of this month that way out yonder some 40 to 50 million light years (1 light year is about 10 trillion km) away in the constellation of Canes Venetici is a pair of interacting galaxies sometimes referred to as "The Cocoon". These two mis-shaped blobs of cosmic stuff have already made their closest approach to each other and are now parting ways. Between them stretches a trail of stars that spans some 24,000 light years as they face each other showing off their numerous star-forming regions.
A picture of The Cocoon
If all that went way over your head, it's alright! What is facinating is that space is so vast and so complex with the many different things happening all over and yet we humans seem like an integral part of it, even though we may just be like a spec of dust on a beach of sand.
When staring into the night sky, one cannot help but wonder how magnificent it is and how mind boggling it is that we humans are somehow "taken care off" in a vast universe of chaotic events where we seem as insignificant as anything imaginable.
The Bible says in the book of Amos 5 verse 8 that, "He made Pleiades and Orion. He turns the shadow of death into morning." Isn't it amazing that the names of these star clusters and constellations have already been mentioned way before scientists actually crowned them with these names?
The next time the you are under open skies, take a minute and look up, observe and ask yourself if you are thankful that there is someone looking out for you, as tiny and insignificant as you might seem to be!
Do you like stargazing? What do you think or feel like when looking up into the night sky? And more than anything, do you feel a sense of comfort while you're at it?
Karun Chandhok is all clear about what awaits him this weekend when India's sole Formula One driver makes his debut barely a week after sealing the deal.
His new Spanish-based HRT team, formerly Campos Meta, have not even conducted a shakedown test of the Cosworth-powered car after narrowly winning a race just to get it ready for the Bahrain season-opener.
"For me personally, it's going to be more of an extended test session really, to just gain as much experience as possible for the team," said the Chennai-born 26-year-old, who has had quite a bit of experience racing in GP2 in 2008.
Well let's see how Chandhok fares at the F1 season which begins with the qualifying session for the Bahrain GP on the 13th of March.

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton found a pile of money on the other side of the looking glass.
"Alice in Wonderland," Tim Burton's anticipated hit based on Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass," had a mammoth opening weekend of $116.1 million.
Given the fact that Johnny Depp has portrayed the Mad Hatter in the movie to a degree that is far beyond imaginable, sort off like as if he was born for that specific role, it is no wonder why the movie has become so big, so very soon.
"The Mad Hatter is unpredictable," Depp says, "like a mood ring, his emotions are right at the surface."
Here's a short trailer of the smash hit and Depp's approach to his character from wired.com
You know, I've always wanted to experience weightlessness and fly about in a zero-gravity room.
This video is from a French Space Clinic on the other hand it shows what happens when a person who is confused about whether he is a ballet dancer or a skateboarder is put in a zero-G room and is left to do what he does best...flop things!
Do any of you know what causes weightlessness in a zero-G environment or have any of you ever experienced it somehow?
Share your thoughts about this and do enjoy the video!
