The powerful earthquake that struck Chile last month has shifted the city of Concepcion by around three metres to the west.
 

Seismological data shows the 8.8 magnitude earthquake, which is the fifth most powerful ever recorded, shifted other parts of South America as well, from the Falkland Islands in the south east to Fortaleza, Brazil, on the north east coast.
 

Movements of the Earth during earthquakes can be measured by comparing the before and after GPS locations of instruments.
